How we work
We work across the four nations of the UK, recognising the distinctive policy contexts and priorities in England and each of the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but also providing opportunities to share expertise among them.
We aspire to work in ways that are proactive, responsive, efficient, transparent, and accountable, and that foster a collaborative, inclusive ethos. We take into account the needs of our community, government and host institution.
Working with departments:
Departmental Key Contact
Every Department, with teaching related to the Health Sciences and Practice Disciplines, is invited to nominate a Key Contact who will support the development of Learning and Teaching through engaging with the Subject Centre. The Key Contact will act as a catalyst in the Department by disseminating relevant information, encouraging staff to engage with the Higher Education Academy and feeding back emerging issues to the Centre. Departmental Workshops
Every year up to 6 Departments are selected to participate in a set of workshops that facilitate the development of an idea, a change in teaching or assessment, or implementing a policy. A team of 3-5 staff work together over a 2-day workshop, then a period of 3-4 months for implementation before the second 2-day workshop to ensure all the intended outcomes are achieved. Applications are generally due in December for workshops in January and April. These are currently free although you will have to cover travel and accommodation (generally in York).
Working with individuals:
We offer experienced teachers and those who are new to teaching in Health Sciences and Practice disciplines a range of services that are designed to enhance teaching and the student learning experience whether in the academic or practice context. Learning and teaching awards for individuals and teams are offered in reward and recognition of good practices in facilitating student learning. Events, activities, resources and funding opportunities for pedagogic research and development are available.
Working with PSRBs and Subject Associations:
Professional, Statutory, and Regulatory Bodies as well as Subject Associations are represented on our Advisory Board and work with us to ensure that learning and teaching is fit for purpose in enabling students to register for practice on graduation.
Working with other organisations:
Collaboration with other organisations that have synergy with our aims and objectives enables us to offer a wider range of services than we would otherwise be able to do. We have representatives on their Committees and Boards and they on ours where appropriate.
